Subaru’s rear-wheel drive sports car will be named BRZ

Subaru’s rear-wheel drive sporty car will be named the BRZ. B stands for boxer engine, the R is for rear-wheel drive, and the Z stands for zenith, as in the "ultimate passion" for sports cars. At the Frankfurt auto show, a new technology concept of the vehicle will be displayed. Output will begin in the spring for the production version, which will debut this December at the Tokyo show.

Subaru is jointly developing this sporty coupe with Toyota Motor Corp. It will be powered by a horizontally opposed boxer engine and production will be at Subaru's plant located in Gumma, Japan. Styling will be done by Toyota, which plans to offer a rebadged version.

Toyota has been referring to this version as the Scion FR-S. There have been reports of sheet metal concepts since 2009. Subaru has not yet unveiled a full concept of its version. So far, what we’ve seen is a clear plastic mock up that shows off the powertrain architecture. The same exterior styling will likely be seen on these two cars.[via : 4wheelsnews]
